Transfer stations and tip fees explained
Almost everything that leaves your property in a truck ends up at a transfer station or resource recovery centre. Understanding how those facilities charge explains most of what you're paying for in a removal quote.
What a transfer station actually is
A transfer station is a sorting and consolidation point, not a landfill. Material arrives, gets separated into recoverable streams — metal, timber, concrete, green waste, e-waste, mattresses — and only the genuine residual goes on to landfill. This is why they care so much about how loads arrive.
How charging works
Most facilities charge by weight, with vehicles weighed on entry and exit. Some smaller sites charge by volume or by vehicle type. Either way, the rate depends heavily on what's in the load:
- Clean separated material — green waste, clean concrete and brick, scrap metal — attracts the lowest rates, and metal is sometimes accepted free or paid for.
- Mixed general waste attracts the highest rate, because it all has to be handled as residual.
- Problem items — mattresses, tyres, gas bottles, refrigerated appliances — usually carry a flat per-item surcharge on top.
Why costs vary so much by location
Two factors drive most of the variation. First, state waste levies: each state applies a levy per tonne of material sent to landfill, and the rates differ substantially between states and between metropolitan and regional areas. Second, distance — a facility a long way from the job means more transport time and fuel in the quote.
This is why the same load can cost meaningfully different amounts in different cities, and why regional pricing sometimes surprises people in both directions.
The practical lesson: separate before you call
If you're preparing for a removal or a tip run, separating material into distinct piles genuinely reduces cost. The separations worth making:
- Scrap metal on its own — it has value rather than cost
- Clean green waste, kept free of plastic pots, soil and treated timber
- Clean concrete, brick and tile with no plaster or timber mixed through
- Anything electronic, which usually has a free e-waste path
- Mattresses, which are charged individually anyway
One bag of general rubbish thrown into a green waste pile can reclassify the entire load at the higher rate. That's contamination, and it's the most expensive small mistake in this whole process.
Taking it yourself
Most transfer stations accept public drop-offs, and many councils provide residents with a number of free or discounted tip vouchers each year — worth checking, as they're commonly unused. Bring proof of address, secure your load properly, and check opening hours; many close earlier than people expect and are busiest on weekend mornings.
Unsecured loads are both dangerous and an offence. If material can blow out of your trailer, it needs to be tied down or covered.
